Default 1972 2dr DATSUN 510 VQ35DE swapped- Ut

SOLD

It was a difficult decision that I've been wrestling for months with but I have decided to sell the VQ swapped 510. Before the dime I had an H23A swapped EF hatch & before that my Lude (both of which some of you may be familiar with). Anyways, I want to start a business (since I'm being laid-off) & need to drum up some capital, so my 510 has got to go for now.

This is a One-of-a-kind 1972 2-Door Datsun 510 with a VQ35DE Engine Swap. That’s right a 287 hp V6 from a 2006 G35/350z. With some quality mods you can get 300whp NA, though it's plenty responsive & quick as is. I have put close to $25,000 into this car, not to mention countless hours working on it. I don’t expect to sell it for that but the closer I can get to that the better of course.

Asking $10,500

Video:

This car has the renowned handling & styling of a 510 & the award winning engine of a 350z in a vehicle that is around 1000lbs. lighter than a Z33. This makes for a very fun & responsive streetcar (or race car) that I’m going to miss greatly. Even my wife doesn't want me to sell it which is rare when if comes to my "toys".

VIN- pm me
Mileage- Who knows?

Engine:
VQ35DE from a 2006 G35 (same engine as the 287hp 350z engine)

Custom Engine Mount brackets (uses stock rubber mounts, the engine is amazingly completely motionless under load, no twisting)

Braided Stainless Steel clutch line
Modified Intake manifold/Upper plenum to have a larger neck & support a Performance Products 85mm Throttle-body (stock is 70mm) 4” intake piping

Spare bolts & parts from the engine
Handbrake, cables, & Wilwood spot calipers (for E-brake conversion)
Spare C pillar vents
Additional spare parts that your typical 510 owner has

As you can see, I have done about all of the performance, handling, drivetrain, & electronic modifications that you can dream of to this car. The only thing that remains to make this car perfect is body-work. The car is a good candidate for bodywork (not a rusted out shell) or you can transfer all of these parts onto an already done chassis.

The body is fairly solid with dings here & there on the exterior, some holes in the floor pans (mainly Driver’s side, that can be spot repaired, does not need complete replacement), & a dented rocker on the driver’s side. The trunk is solid (not rusted out) & the rear tail light panel was replaced with fiberglass. The front passenger side fender was recently replaced & rattle-canned white to match the car for now, awaiting my future plans to paint the car. With some body work & some wire tucking this will be even more of eye turner than it already is.
Buy this car, do the bodywork how you want it, and make it yours.

You could buy a 350z or G35 for less than that? How do you have 25k in that?

I really love the car and wanted to put in an offer but I was surprised to see that price.

To summarize what things cost for those less familiar with 510's or VQ's (roughly):
Initial purchase price of the car- $4500 (it had a KA24DE & brakes already done)
Engine, trans, & EMS/Harness- $5500
Engine parts (spacer, wideband, intake, T-body, manifold mods, oil cooler)- $1250
Drivetrain (driveshaft, R200 diff, LSD, Modded CV's, Comp flanges, Stub axles)-$3250
Fuel System (cell, braided lines, AN fittings, fuel rails, pumps, surge tank, FPR)-$1300
Custom Dash- $600
Suspension & steering- $1000
Wheels & tires- $1200
Interior (seats, harnesses, Steering wheel/hub/quick release)-$900
Exhaust- $700
Brake upgrades (MC, new lines, braided lines, bias adjuster)-$300
Extra parts listed above are worth over $2000
All the little things (radiator, bolts, fluids, wiring, headlights, sensors, metal fabrication, etc.) I'm not mentioning are probably another $2000-$3000
Total- approx. $2450

There is so much custom work done to this car that you don't see on the surface. I have put around 800 hours working on the car & equal to that or more doing research on everything. I pulled the engine in & out at least 5 times while test fitting everything & fabricating stuff. Granted I'm no reputable swap shop but my hours are worth basically another 20k (based on my hourly rate at work) & I certainly don't expect to recoup that.

I could've built the car for less, if I didn't go to such lengths with the fuel system, drivetrain, gauges, oil cooler, larger intake setup, etc. I did however want to insure that it could handle this kind of power with longevity, without things breaking, be ready for additional power increase if I decided to boost it. My heart races to just think of driving the car, it is so responsive & nimble.

This is no Z. It's much lighter/quicker, very nimble, a classic Sport Compact that will get you far more attention (if that's what you want) than a Z.

Feel free to PM me an offer so I can get a better sense of what the general public feels it's worth.

My thoughts exactly.
Several people have tried this swap. This is the only successful one.

I had a KA in this before doing this swap. Yes, the KA was fun, but this brings it to a whole new level.

Thanks for the compliments.
It is a blast & I doubt I will ever put together another car that can top this one.
Responsibility has finally got the best of me though.

That's part of the reason I bought a 510, is so that if we moved back to California I wouldn't have to deal with CARB requirements again (my Lude had a sick custom long tube exhaust manifold with a built/sleeved H22 that could take 30+ lbs. of boost, but I returned it back to NA when I moved to California, still had to be smogged illegally so I wish kept the turbo set-up). As far as I remember the cut-off in Cali is 1975, so yes it's exempt.

Also for other states, like Utah for example. It is only required to meet the same emissions standards it did in 1972 which are really easy to meet. My ignition map was way off & the car was running rich & I still passed. The tune is much better now though.

RB engines are well renowned but heavier than sin & would throw the balance of a 510 off a ton. It would also require hacking the firewall to fit an I-6.

The VQ is fairly light & weighs about the same as the I-4 KA24DE that I had in it at first.
